Read: The Christmas Box by Richard Paul Evans
Stars: Four
Drinking: Earl Grey Classic, Fortnum & Mason
The Christmas Box is a heartbreaking but ultimately inspiring story of parental love. Richard and Kari and their daughter Jenna move in with mysterious widow Mary to care for her and her rambling mansion. As Richard struggles to provide for his family, Mary becomes concerned that he is neglecting his relationship with them. In the few weeks leading up to Christmas that the family lives with Mary, they become very close to her. Eventually, Richard learns her secret and his perception of life's priorities is changed.
The book explores themes of love, loss, and the true meaning of Christmas. Evans wrote the story for his daughters to show them how much he loves them. It has heavy Christian themes based around the birth of Jesus and his ultimate sacrifice and resurrection to reinforce that parental love is, in Evans' mind, similar to the love Christ has for us.
As a warning, this book is a major tearjerker, particularly the end. Keep a box of tissues on hand!
